What is Anemia?

Have you ever wondered what anemia is? It is a common diagnosis in doctor’s offices across the country and is often given without much explanation as to what it is, what it means for you, and what are the best treatment options. This often leaves individuals feeling uncertain as to how this truly affects them and what it means for their future health.

Dr. Hayden and Dr. Horsley will help to clear up some of these questions as they begin this series, “Understanding Anemia – Overcoming Fatigue, Bruising, and Other Symptoms”. You will learn about what anemia is, what the symptoms are, how it is diagnosed, what the best treatment options are, and what it is commonly misdiagnosed as. These videos will be released over the next couple days on our youtube account, facebook account, and as a blog post on The Hayden Institute website.

Transcript From Video on What is Anemia:

Dr. Hayden: Today we’re gonna talk a little bit about something called anemia, you may have heard of that word before. Anemia is a common diagnosis that we hear about people having, but today we’re gonna dive in a little bit deeper into what anemia is. So, Dr. Horsley, what is anemia?

Dr. Horsley: Anemia is a condition that has to do with your blood. So you have different type of cells in your bloodstream, one of them being your red blood cells. Anemia is a condition that has to do with those cells, either there is too few, or they’re not being created effectively. This could be that they are being destroyed too quickly or because of different vitamin or mineral imbalances that they are not being created effectively. This can in turn lead to several symptoms.

Dr. Hayden: Therefore, if the red blood cells are not carrying oxygen like they should– whether because they’re genetically grown inappropriately, nutritional imbalance, dehydration, or whatever the reason it might be- if the red blood cell doesn’t have enough oxygen and doesn’t carry it effectively that could be called anemia.
