Vitamin F for Itching, Cold Sores, Prostate Health and More!

Cataplex F, a product from Standard Process, was released in 1934 and has a rich history of success! Although you may never have heard of Vitamin F, you may be surprised to learn of the body’s need for Vitamin F for optimal health.
Vitamin F is an old name that covers what are now known as EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids), two of the most important being linoleic and alpha-linolenic. Cataplex F, contains flax seed oil (alpha-linolenic) and liver extract containing other polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Vitamin F’s relation to Calcium and Vitamin D:

  • Vitamin D picks up Calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and other soft tissues (like mucous membranes and muscles) and puts it into the blood. Vitamin F, however, has an opposite function and moves Calcium from the blood and puts it into soft tissues like mucous membranes and muscles.
  • Problems can occur, however, when these three nutrients are out of balance. For example, if a person gets too much vitamin D and not enough Vitamin F, then Calcium is pulled out of the soft tissues and put back into the blood and then soft tissue health is compromised. An example of this would be people who are susceptible to hives, especially upon sun exposure, or those who easily get sunburned because of the Vitamin D pulling the Calcium out of the soft tissue.
  • Itching can often be a sign of low Vitamin F (note that patients without a gallbladder can often experience this itching as well). Sometimes a person needs Calcium as well as Vitamin F to ensure that enough Calcium is available to get into the soft tissue. Please note that a person who has low stomach acid production or is taking acid blockers will often be low in Calcium and simply giving Calcium will likely not help. In order for Calcium to be absorbed (and other minerals for that matter) strong stomach acid is needed.
  • Charlie horses, muscle cramping or sore muscles, especially after exertion, and cold sores, canker sores and fever blisters can all be indicative of a person being low in bio-available Calcium and/or Vitamin F.
  • Supplying Calcium Lactate and Cataplex F can help to relax a closed illeocecal valve sphincter muscle and allow the movement of waste to complete its journey in the colon.
  • And last but not least is the use of Vitamin F for patients with Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH).
