My name is Dr Amber Horsley of the Hayden Institute; I am a Doctor of Chiropractic, and certified in Acupuncture and Clinical Nutrition. Today I really wanted to talk about three things that you can do to help to naturally overcome anxiety.
The first thing that I want to talk about is deep breathing. This is something that is very easy to apply into your daily life – what it involves is sitting in a chair and uncrossing your legs if you’re doing that sit up nice and tall put your hand on your belly and on your chest. Then you’re going to take deep breaths in and out through your belly. When you have your hand on your chest and your belly you should feel your belly hand moving first- that’s your primary mover during this deep breathing exercise. You’re going to take a deep breath in for five seconds and you’re going to hold it at the top for five seconds and then you’re going to let it all the way out for five seconds. [Demonstration of deep breathing technique]. [Repeat this technique] as many times as you can – if you have a break from work or if you have a particularly stressful moment, excuse yourself and allow yourself to take a couple of this deep breathing breaks. It is a great great option.
Another thing I highly recommend is different natural herbs and supplements to help with your response during this stressful period. A lot of things that we have found to work really nice in the office are magnesium, orchic extract, and calcium. A lot of these different vitamins and minerals can help your body during this stressful period. Another thing that typically really helps a lot of individuals is an herb called Albizia. Other great options are Ashwagandha and Tulsi, also known as holy basil. However I highly recommend finding a functional medicine practitioner- someone who can try to look at these things for you. This is because those herbs and supplements generally help individuals but everyone is so specific and so individual that I encourage you to find someone that can best help you to determine which option may be the best for you as an individual.
The last thing I want to talk about that can help with anxiety is acupuncture. Acupuncture has been shown both clinically in our office and also through research on pubmed to help with anxiety. Some recent studies in 2019 and 2020 showed on pubmed that acupuncture, especially electro acupuncture (where they use tens units on the needles), is very beneficial in helping to reduce anxiety symptoms and reduce the level of a chemical that is released that is stimulated to the adrenals when they’re over stressed. That is a great option and has been shown by research to be beneficial clinically in the office. We have had several patients that suffer with anxiety, panic attacks, and other related symptoms. Many patients have said that when they leave they feel so much better and calm once they’re done with an appointment. One individual who came in in the middle of a panic attack reported when she was home that her panic attack was completely gone and her panic attacks typically last for hours to days. She stated that our treatment made a big impact on her ability to overcome her panic attack.
To summarize, there are several different things that you can do to help to overcome stress and anxiety naturally. First thing I would recommend is doing some deep breathing techniques- really focusing on slow deep breaths in and out, counting for five, holding at the top for five, and letting it out, all while focusing on breathing through your belly. Secondly, find a supplement that can best help you and your body to manage stress during this time. Lastly, if you have an opportunity, try acupuncture and find a practitioner who can help you during this time with overcoming anxiety.
I want to thank you so much and I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day. Thank you.
