She has such a passion for teaching and empowering her patients on a holistic approach to medicine. She truly embodies the word, doctor, and its meaning, teacher.
Dr. Horsley’s article is entitled: The Physiological Response to Dysbiosis Impacting the Immune, Nervous and Endocrine Systems.
What does this mean??? An imbalance in your gut flora, the trillions of bacteria that are in your gut, can affect your immune system, nervous system and hormones. This network is so intricate that it is often known as your second brain. Disruption of this balance of microbes in your gut occurs through various ways, such as: a diet high in genetically modified foods, trans-fats, antibiotics, stress (which is not limited to emotional, but also – chemicals, toxins, trauma and hormones), and even breast feeding vs formula and vaginal vs cesarean section delivery. All of these factors impact the microbes ability to function, and therefore, impact the body as a whole. Many different conditions can occur from this imbalance in the microbiome (dysbiosis), such as: depression, anxiety, IBS, autism, Parkinson’s, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. It is important to note that this is not an exhaustive list. Any process that is governed by the immune system, nervous system and hormonal system may be compromised… which is everything in your body. This is why proper diet and lifestyle is so fundamental to health.
If you have any questions on the interaction between the brain and gut and how they affect your nervous system, hormones or immune system, come on into the office and she will teach you all you need to know… and more!!
