ACNE and Acupuncture

ACNE occurs when oil and dead skin cells plug up where hair follicles exit the skin.  It commonly is found on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders.  ACNE heals slowly and can cause emotional distress and lead to scarring of the skin.  The sooner treatment begins, the lower the chances are of developing lasting physical and emotional damage.

Most individuals who suffer from ACNE will try product after product that clean the surface of the skin.  On occasion, this will help with the immediate blemishes, but it will not take care of the underlying cause.  For years, doctors have used acupuncture in combination with nutrition to address many of the underlying causes of ACNE.

ACNE is one of the most common skin conditions in the United States.  Once a child enters  adolescents, and even extending into adulthood, blemishes become an embarrassing part of life.  Severity can vary widely from white/black heads to extensive formations of cysts, and even scarring.  It is even possible for the ACNE to cause physical pain and lead to skin infections.

Acupuncture Meridian Viewpoint

Acupuncture functions by maintaining a proper flow of energy through the meridians of the body.  These meridians originate from different major organs.  ACNE can be associated with the Lung, Stomach, and Spleen meridians.

  • Lung – in charge of the skin.  Regulates the opening and closing of pores.
  • Stomach – digestion of food.  Improperly digested foods can provoke hormone imbalances leading to ACNE.
  • Spleen – generates energy.  Energy is used to assist the stomach digest foods.

The types of foods we eat play a role in how these meridians function.  Eating greasy, spicy, and heavy foods disrupt the spleen and stomach meridians, which put stress on the lung meridian and provokes an ACNE flare up.

Treatment

ACNE is not provoked by the same thing in everyone.  An evaluation needs to be done in order to determine underlying causes and the best method of approach.  Many times, acupuncture to strengthen the energy flow of the Lung, Stomach, and Spleen meridians in combination with Auricular (ear) acupuncture and nutrition are used.
